Originally from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, I began learning the piano at the age of seven, purely out of curiosity! A friend of mine had just started lessons and she enjoyed showing off her new-found skills. Not wanting to miss out of course, I decided I’d like to give it a try too! A few lessons down the line with a scooter-riding piano teacher and I was hooked…
A short time later I was given the opportunity to take up a second instrument at school, and so began my musical journey on the violin. I continued to learn the violin at school, progressing well enough to play in school assemblies, concerts, events and festivals, eventually reaching a standard high enough to play as part of the Scarborough Orchestra for many years.
On finishing school, I completed a degree in Music and Music Technology at Hull University, and then a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Leeds University, York St John College. In 2003 I completed my teacher training and moved to Kendal to begin my teaching career at Dallam School in Cumbria. I was appointed as ‘Head of Music’ after my first year of teaching, with responsibility for Music throughout the school. This role included planning the music curriculum, managing other music staff, preparing students for GCSE and A-Level music exams and of course organising many concerts, festivals and public events. I remained in this post for seven years, gaining valuable experience and learning many effective teaching strategies that I regularly use in my private teaching practice.
I currently teach Music in the classroom for the Lancaster Royal Grammar School, alongside running a busy teaching practice at home which I share with my husband and two dogs! If you fancy trying your hand at learning the piano, violin or keyboard, then drop me a line..I’d love to hear from you!
